Credit unions have a history of serving communities all over Ireland and this competition is very important to us. It is all about encouraging and rewarding creativity and originality. As ever, local winners at credit union level in each category go forward to Regional Finals. Trade association leaders like me, can lead on advocacy efforts, but we can only work with credit union leaders for a better credit union system, not decide its future in a vacuum.
Surely we’ll continue to work on dues choice (two leagues now allow it and CUNA continues to listen and adapt to input), a more aggressive legislative and regulatory agenda coordinated by CUNA and leagues, and many other issues pertaining to 1)removing barriers, 2)promoting CUs, 3)providing solutions that help credit unions be successful. We’ll also continue to build out our suite of CUNA/League compliance solutions, recognizing how important this service area is to all credit unions. I wonder sometimes why I am not a dues paying card carrying member of the Credit Union League.
So, I’m proud to participate in many less-than-perfect processes in less-than-perfect venues that have extremely good intentions for helping the credit union industry be successful. Many leagues, if not most, are struggling financially, as are many credit unions that are your dues-paying members, yet you decide to attend a meeting at a FIVE STAR RESORT.
The Leagues have a CHOICE to make… although credit unions are being denied that option… except by the good leaders in Michigan and Florida. While credit unions continue to experience compression to the bottom line, declining ROA, and increasing operating expenses these League Presidents jet around the globe to 5-Star Resorts with no shame, remorse or guilt. Would hope that that statement is true, but the way NCUA has been acting the last few years, would be willing to bet NCUA thinks it has statuary authority over credit unions, if you know what I mean!
